Matchday 32 of Ligue 1 kicks off with what looks to be the most lopsided match possible, as bottom-placed Angers host leaders PSG, knowing they could be mathematically relegated to Ligue 2 should they lose. Doing their best to help their team, last weekend some SCO fans even tried to distract then opponents Clermont by showing their rear end during the two penalties their team committed, but it didn’t work as Angers eventually lost 2-1 to stay at the bottom of the standings.
Coach Alexandre Dujeux lamented his players’ “lack of sharpness” during that loss on Sunday, after his team scored the first goal during the first 30 minutes and even played the entire second half with an extra player. A return to the Stade Raymond-Kopa will be positive for Angers, who have taken points from their last two home games (G1, E1), and their recent 1-0 win here against in-form Lille shows that a positive result in this clash is not impossible.
PSG bounced back from consecutive home defeats in Ligue 1 on Saturday with a 3-1 win over Lens, their closest rivals before the final round, which left coach Christophe Galtier quite happy. The Parisian side’s coach, who has been plagued by accusations of racism which he denies, is now close to his second French title as manager, with PSG eight points clear at the top of the Ligue 1 standings.
Although Galtier declared that his men should not believe “it’s a done deal”, it seems almost impossible that PSG will be denied an eleventh French title, a figure that would also represent a record at local level, considering that they will only face teams currently in tenth place or below until the end of the season. They have also had good results when visiting Angers, having taken all three points on the last six occasions they have played there. In fact, their last defeat at this ground and against this opponent was in January 1975.
Players to watch: After ending a 17-game Ligue 1 drought against Clermont, Angers’ Adrien Hunou could be a threat, having scored three of his four league goals at home. Kylian Mbappé did not play the previous game against Angers but could be a key figure in this match, as he has 12 goal contributions in just seven games against this opponent (G8, A4).
