Atl. Madrid – Feyenoord : Preview & Prediction

All the courage and fighting spirit of Diego Pablo Simeone’s team was on display in the clash between Atlético de Madrid and Cádiz played on Sunday at the Metropolitano. The colchoneros came from 2-0 down to beat Cádiz 3-2 and move up to fourth place in LaLiga EA Sports (LL). Atleti have won three times in as many matches since they let slip a win against Lazio (LAZ 1-1 ATM) – conceding a goal by goalkeeper Ivan Provedel in the 95th minute – on the opening day of the UEFA Champions League (UCL), a streak they will be looking to extend (UCL) to take the lead in Group E.

Cholo Simeone’s side, who finished last in their UCL group for the first time last season, have won just two of their last 11 group matches (G2, E3, P6) and are currently on a six-game winless streak (E3, P3). The Metropolitano is once again a fortress in LL -the colchoneros have 12 consecutive league wins at home- and it remains to be seen if Atleti is able to maintain that strength in the continental competition.

Feyenoord arrive in the Spanish capital at the top of Group E thanks to last month’s 2-0 win over Celtic, who finished with nine men. Arne Slot’s side will not lack confidence after starting their Eredivisie title defense without losing any of their first seven matches (G5, E2), a run that includes a 4-0 win over Ajax and 6-1 defeats of Almere City and Heerenveen.
Although the Rotterdam club has won six consecutive matches in all competitions, it will not be easy for them to break their streak of seven European outings without a draw (E3, P4). That run is even worse if we focus on the UCL, where they have a whopping seven defeats away from De Kuip. Their last away win in the competition dates back to September 2022, when they beat Newcastle United 1-0 at St James’ Park.

Players to watch: Alvaro Morata has scored five goals in just six LL appearances for Atleti this season, but the Madrid striker has gone seven appearances as a Red-and-White without a goal in the UCL since the 2019-20 campaign. Keep an eye on Feyenoord’s in-form Calvin Stengs, who has scored/assisted eight goals in his last six appearances (G3, A5).
Key stat: Atleti have kept a clean sheet in each of their last four meetings with Dutch clubs.
