Any hopes of a place in the European places are fading as each game passes for Borussia Mönchengladbach, after recording their fourth winless game in five appearances since the season resumed (G1, E1, P3). Coach Daniel Farke insisted that his men will “learn” from that 4-1 defeat to relegation-threatened Hertha, and will certainly have to prepare optimally before ten-time consecutive German champions Bayern Munich come to town.
This does not seem to be the ideal match for Gladbach to finally record their first home league win of 2023 (E1, P1), especially after failing to score against Schalke the last time they played at home (0-0). However, soccer is a funny game, and no team has recorded more league wins against the Bavarian giants than Gladbach’s 27 (E31, P51), although that said, this is the second most contested duel in Bundesliga history.
Perhaps this could be the perfect time to pounce on Bayern, who come here after a successful midweek trip to Paris in which the German giants beat PSG 1-0. That UEFA Champions League clash could hamper their preparations for this fixture, but without a domestic defeat since the resumption of the season (G3, E3), only the brave would go against Julian Nagelsmann’s side.
Both Union Berlin and Borussia Dortmund remain very close to Bayern, so anything less than victory will leave the visitors susceptible to a drop from top spot on Sunday. Perhaps alleviating any doubts about such an outcome is Bayern’s incredible 11-game unbeaten streak away from home, with the visitors scoring an impressive 31 goals in the process (G9, E2).
Players to watch: Marcus Thuram has contributed to 37% of Gladbach’s league goals this season (ten goals, three assists), but has yet to score since the resumption of the campaign. Perhaps facing his former teammate, Yann Sommer, could be the catalyst for success. The Swiss goalkeeper made the switch from Gladbach to Bayern in January after making 335 appearances for the “Foals”, however, he was only able to register his first clean sheet for his new team the previous matchday.
Key fact: As Bayern coach, Nagelsmann has not faced any team as often as Gladbach without being able to win a match (E2, P2).
