B. Monchengladbach – Hoffenheim : Preview & Prediction

Borussia Mönchengladbach begin their Bundesliga season against the team they defeated 5-1 on the final day of the 2021/22 season, Hoffenheim. Despite recording the biggest win in a clash between the sides, Gladbach finished just below their opponents by finishing tenth in the league, their worst position since the 2010/11 campaign, a disappointment that led to a change of coach and the appointment of Daniel Farke as their new manager.
The former Norwich boss got off to the best possible start with his side massacring Oberachern 9-1 in the German Cup last weekend in what was the team’s biggest win in four years. It has been a quiet transfer window for the club, bringing in only Ko Itakura from Manchester City and youngster Oscar Fraulo from Midtjylland.
Hoffenheim were not so lucky in the cup as they needed extra time to eliminate Rödinghausen, finishing the game 2-0 thanks to Ozan Kabak and Grischa Prömel. The aim now is a rare win over BMG, as they have only beaten their opponents three times in the last 17 meetings (E8, P6).
After a ninth place finish in the Bundesliga last season, Hoffenheim have also changed coach, with André Breitenreiter arriving in place of Sebastian Hoeneß. Recent cup scorer Prömel is one of two signings alongside Finn Ole Becker with whom Hoffenheim are looking to qualify for European competitions for the fourth time in their history, but to do so they will need to improve their away records (G5, E3, P9 in 2021/22).
Players to watch: Gladbach striker Alassane Pléa has three goals and four assists in seven games against Hoffenheim, but has won just two of those matches (E4, P1). Meanwhile, Andrej Kramarić has scored in three of his last four games against BMG in the last two seasons, losing just one of those clashes (G2, E1).
Weekend stat: Gladbach have now gone six consecutive seasons without losing their opening league game at home (G3, E3).
