Borussia Mönchengladbach finally got their first win of the Bundesliga season (G1, E2, P3) on the final day with a 3-1 result against VfL Bochum. The victory was marred by problems with traveling Gladbach fans, which led to a ten-minute delay in the start of the match due to their fans refusing to remove some banners blocking the security gates. After they finally relented and went into a silent boycott in protest, they quietly watched their team take all three points for the first time this Bundesliga season after scoring the first goal (G1, E1, P1).
Despite this, Gladbach have recorded their worst six-game start since the 2015/16 season, which was only the fourth time this century that they have totaled five or fewer points at this stage of the campaign, and this is something they even avoided when they lost the division in the 2006/07 season. It is one of the worst possible times to meet an opponent they have not beaten in their last five Bundesliga games, while there is no home advantage to be had, having suffered all three of their defeats in this league campaign in front of their fans.
FSV Mainz may have claimed recent bragging rights in recent history against BMG, but even so their season has been nothing short of disastrous (E1, P5). It wasn’t that long ago that the current bottom of the standings started their campaign even worse, with no points after six games in the 2020/2021 season, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that this season has been a negative one. In fact, it is worth noting that they have suffered four of their five league defeats by two or more goals.
The visitors have already conceded ten goals in three away games (P3) and are now in a drought of more than six months without a win on home soil in the Bundesliga (E2, P5). Despite this precarious situation, the Mainz club’s management maintains a calm public presence, led by sporting director Christian Heidel, who called speculation about Bo Svensson’s future “completely unnecessary… the whole club feels we are ready, now we need the results and he will get them.”
Players to watch: Alassane Pléa scored two first-half goals last weekend for Gladbach, and earlier scored a brace at home to Mainz. The visitors could benefit from another Jae-Sung Lee goal, as the team has accumulated 16 of a possible 21 points from 2022/23 onwards when scoring.
