Bayern Munich – Darmstadt : Preview & Prediction
Although not in their usual position at the top of the Bundesliga table, perennial title contenders Bayern Munich continued their unbeaten start to the league campaign (G6, E2) with back-to-back wins over Freiburg and Mainz in between international breaks. It is the first time since the 2016/17 season that Bayern have gone this far in a top-flight season without defeat, and they kept the momentum going with a 3-1 win over Galatasaray in midweek European action.
Possessing the league’s most devastating attack with 26 goals is a big reason why Bayern are unbeaten, and if they increase that tally here, then they will score in their 62nd consecutive top-flight home game, meaning they are now fast approaching the Bundesliga record (64) set between 1970 and 1974. Darmstadt are next up at the Allianz Arena, which should boost the home side’s confidence, as the Bavarians have won 29 of their last 32 Bundesliga home games against newly promoted teams (E2, P1).
It’s a frightening prospect for Darmstadt, who have never beaten Bayern in 12 subsequent attempts since winning the first meeting between the two in December 1952 (E1, P11). And Torsten Lieberknecht’s men appear to be struggling on their return to the top flight for the first time since 2016/17, managing just two league wins (E1, P5), with their last battle ending in a 3-1 defeat at home to RB Leipzig.
Another loss here would see the away side lose six of their first nine games of a Bundesliga season for the first time in their history. Having conceded the most goals in the competition prior to this matchday shines a light on their biggest problem at present, while having failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 25 away games in the top flight indicates that it has been a problem that has plagued them for some time against Germany’s elite.
Players to watch: Bayern’s Kingsley Coman has scored in four of his last five games at club and international level, netting the opening goal during the first 15 minutes on three of those occasions. Not to be outdone, Tobias Kempe has scored in Darmstadt’s last three games, and all of those goals have come from the penalty spot.
