Ferencvaros – Genk : Preview & Prediction
Unbeaten in Europa Conference League (UECL) Group F, Ferencváros will be looking for their second win of the campaign on Thursday when Genk make the nearly 1,200-kilometer trip to Hungary. The Hungarian side are on five points, the same amount as their opponents and Fiorentina, although they will still be rueing the fact that they squandered a 2-0 lead against Fiorentina at the beginning of October.
The build-up to this match will have a different feel for the home side, as they experienced defeat for the first time under Dejan Stanković last weekend. The 2-1 loss to Kecskemét ended Ferencváros’ 16-match unbeaten run (G13, E1), including a draw against Genk late last month, and while that streak may be over, they will continue to defend their unbeaten record against Belgian sides in this fixture (G2, E3).
Genk will be aiming for their third consecutive clean sheet in the UECL and their second consecutive away win in the group stage, a far cry from the record in their previous eleven European away games, when they won just once (E3, P7) and scored just seven goals. As with Ferencváros, Saturday cut short a long unbeaten run dating back to early September (G5, E7) for the Blue and Whites following a 3-2 defeat away to Royal Antwerp when they were unable to recover from a 3-0 deficit after the first 40 minutes.
This will be Genk’s first official visit to Hungary, but as the country borders Serbia, where Wouter Vrancken’s side defeated bottom-placed Čukarički 2-0 last month in the UECL, they will make the trip to the southeast with fond memories of the region thanks to recent good results.
Players to watch: Ferencváros midfielder Mohammed Abu Fani did not play at the weekend, but scored two goals and assisted on another in his last two games, as well as contributing an assist in the draw against Fiorentina in the UECL. Swiss striker Andi Zeqiri has scored in his last two games for Genk and also scored the equalizer against Fiorentina in this competition.
