Getafe’s reaction in LaLiga Santander (LL) was halted last weekend with a 3-2 loss to Valladolid at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, and Quique Sánchez Flores’ side (7/21 pts – G2, E1, P4) will start this matchday with a margin of just three points above relegation, which is marked by Almería with four units. Getafe is one of the three teams that have received three red cards in the current championship, something that has undoubtedly penalized the azulón side, which has not finished in the top half of the table since 2019-20.
Three are also the goals scored by the azulones in the last eight duels at their home ground against Real Madrid (G1, E2, P5), who have won in only one of their last visits to the Coliseum (Getafe: G1, E2, P1). Getafe can string together home wins against Los Blancos for the first time in their history, but go into Saturday’s clash against the reigning LL champions having won just one of their last eight league games at home (G1, E4, P3), four of which ended 0-0!
For their part, Real Madrid go into the derby on the back of a narrow 2-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League. Carlo Ancelotti’s squad dropped their first points in LL 2022-23 by drawing 1-1 with Osasuna last matchday. Ancelotti wants his side to be more effective offensively, especially given that they have yet to keep a clean sheet so far in the league, although the award-winning Italian coach does not appear to be overly concerned. “The important thing is to have plenty of chances,” said Ancelotti after the clash against Shakhtar.
The defending champions have created numerous scoring chances away from home this term, and are chasing their fifth consecutive away league win, having achieved each of their four victories despite conceding exactly one goal. Los Blancos had not started an LL championship by winning in their first four outings since 2017-18, but were then defeated in the fifth.
Players to watch: ex-Madridista Borja Mayoral opened his LL 2022-23 scoring account against Valladolid. In each of his last five appearances with a goal, Mayoral has scored Getafe’s first goal. Meanwhile, Vinicius Junior has scored Real Madrid’s final goal in the last two official matches.
