Hungary – Serbia : Preview & Prediction
Hungary’s very interesting and balanced match on Saturday against Serbia in Group G of European Championship qualification. Hungary is on a great run and after four days already has 10 points: it is the favorite to win the group and qualification for the European Championships seems really accessible. Serbia has 10 points after five games, is also in the running and has a two-point lead over the Montenegrin brothers but lost in the first leg against Hungary and will have to play for qualification probably in a few days in Belgrade against Montenegro.
Hungary is in excellent form. It drew only one game in the group, in Montenegro, and in September took a big step forward by defeating Serbia away from home. The results take on even more significance when one considers that the quality of the roster is not excellent, with many players playing in the local league. Serbia is performing well and is still the favorite to pass the round even though the group is certainly not the toughest.
Hungary has a roster of players who taken individually are not competitive at the highest level, but they have technical continuity with the same coach for five years on the bench and the collective can challenge anyone as demonstrated in the “Group of Death” at last European Championships (Hungary finished fourth in the group with France, Germany and Portugal but lost only once. Serbia has a decent level squad, perhaps superior to Hungary’s even though they are missing Vlahovic who has started the season well. Cagliari goalkeeper Radunovic is absent but there are others of good level such as Majorcan Rajkovic or Turin’s Milinkovic-Savic.
