Newcastle have been a clear midfield club for some time now, and they are not aiming higher. Either the team is playing maintenance or they are not playing anything very quickly. This start to the season is very difficult with already two defeats in as many games played. We will quickly have to recover!
Southampton have a similar profile to their opponent today, and have not finished in the first half of the table in a couple of years. Despite quality players, and the Saints do not succeed enough to raise their level of play over time, and therefore fail to compete with other clubs. The club started the new season smoothly, with a loss to Everton and a solid draw against Manchester United.
Newcastle finished 15th in the Premier League last year.
Newcastle lost their first two games (2-4 against West Ham and then 2-0 at Aston Villa).
Southampton finished 15th in the Premier League last year.
Southampton lost their first game to Everton (3-1) before hanging up Manchester United (1-1).
Southampton are capable of putting in good games and putting in good results, as they did last week against Manchester United. We will have to reproduce these efforts over the long term, and come back from this trip with a positive result.
