Plzen – D. Zagreb : Preview & Prediction
Viktoria Plzeň are sweeping through Group C of the UEFA Europa Conference League in what is their first appearance in the competition, winning all three of their group matches so far to open up a six-point lead over their pursuers ahead of this matchday. The experience in their ninth UEFA tournament group stage experience is proving very positive for the Czech club, who also made it through three qualifying rounds without any problems (G5, E1).
Next on Plzeň’s agenda will be to confirm their passage to the next stage, and they can achieve that goal should they achieve a draw in this fixture. Dinamo Zagreb is the opponent standing between the home side and the last 16 of the UECL, with Plzeň the bookmakers’ favorite to repeat the victory achieved in Zagreb last matchday. That 1-0 win continued their trend of winning all three of their Group C matches by a one-goal margin so far.
As for Dinamo Zagreb, they are one of three clubs going into Matchday 4 stuck on three points along with Ballkani and Astana, after losing to the former 2-0 on Matchday 2 and beating the latter 5-1 on the opening day. The Croatian club will therefore be looking to take over second place in what is also their first UECL group stage campaign, while at the same time looking to put pressure on the home side heading into the remaining two fixtures.
This may prove to be a difficult task for Sergej Jakirović and his men, as Dinamo are winless in their five previous visits to the Czech Republic (E2, P3). In fact, the “Blues” have also been on a negative run in their recent away clashes at international level, winning just one of their last eight continental away matches (E1, P6), so with two games on rival soil still to come for Dinamo, there is plenty of work to be done.
Players to watch: Plzeň’s Tomáš Chorý has been involved in five of his team’s UECL goals this season (three goals, two assists), with four of those contributions coming in the second half. Zagreb’s biggest threat could be Mahir Emreli, who scored his last six goals away from home.
