RB Leipzig – Hertha Berlin : Preview & Prediction
After a shaky start on the RB Leipzig bench (G1, P2), Marco Rose has bounced back with an unbeaten run of four games (G3, E1) that included a sensational win in Glasgow in UEFA Champions League action in midweek. Rose’s criticism of striker Timo Werner for being “petulant” when he was substituted seems to have worked wonders, as the striker responded by scoring the opener in their latest win.
Attention now returns to the Bundesliga, and with Leipzig sitting in the bottom half of the table after their worst start to a top-flight season after nine games (G3, E3, P3), there is plenty of work to be done. Recording a four-game winning streak at home for the first time since February would be a good start, and with ten goals scored and just one conceded in the last four-and-a-half hours of play at this venue, the Red Bulls are certainly heading towards that mark.
After taking just one of the first 12 points available, Hertha Berlin have since recorded an unbeaten run of five league matches (G1, E4). That is the second-longest active unbeaten run prior to this matchday behind Freiburg, however, Hertha are also currently on their longest Bundesliga draw streak since a five-game run in the 2005/06 campaign.
Draws are often uninspiring, but having come from behind in three of their last four games suggests that this team will not give up easily, especially as two of those matches were against teams currently competing in Europe. However, solidity does not always indicate success, and Hertha’s record of one win after nine games is the lowest in the top flight at this stage since 2009/10.
Players to watch: Christopher Nkunku’s seven goals in nine Bundesliga games is the most for any Leipzig player in the club’s history at this stage of a top-flight campaign. For Hertha, Suat Serdar has not been far from the action, recording two goals and two yellow cards in his last three appearances.
