With five defeats in their last six matches (E1) and only one win in all competitions since the beginning of December (E2, P10), Sassuolo now find themselves in the Serie A relegation zone on goal difference ahead of the visit of Napoli. The “Neroverdi” have won at home just once in their last nine league matches (E3, P5), a record they need to improve if they are to remain in Serie A for a twelfth consecutive season.
Bolstering the defense will be a priority for Alessio Dionisi’s men, who have conceded three goals in their last two games (including the 94th-minute winner against Empoli on Saturday) and have conceded 11 in their last four. All of this will be music to the ears of Napoli, a side that has been prolific against Sassuolo recently, registering 19 goals in the last six meetings between the sides, which translates directly into four straight wins heading into this match.
A fifth straight win would be especially welcome for the “Partenopei” side, who have not won away from home since the end of November (E2, P5) and have drawn 1-1 in their last three matches in all competitions. However, it would be no surprise if Napoli were to draw again, having shared points in five of their last seven trips north to play Sassuolo (G2).
Francesco Calzona became Napoli’s fourth coach since June last year when he was appointed last week, and looked set to lead them to victory in his first league game in charge on Sunday before a 96th-minute equalizer at Cagliari, one of two teams level on points with Sassuolo. That draw means Napoli start this match firmly in mid-table, with Calzona aiming for his first win in charge to keep the team in the hunt for a place in next season’s European competitions.
