Sweden – Ukraine : Preview & Prediction
It is one of the most undecided round of 16 of this Euro 2020. This Tuesday evening, Sweden challenges Ukraine, to join the quarter-finals of the European competition. For the moment, Sweden is having an excellent course. Yet in a very homogeneous pool, Janne Andersson’s team did very hard to finish in the lead. It also started with a draw, against one of the big favorites of the event, Spain (0-0). Subsequently, Alexander Isak’s teammates were able to compile their ticket for the round of 16 by winning against Slovakia (1-0). Finally, Sweden also offered the three points against Poland, who absolutely had to win to snatch their ticket for the rest (3-2).
Seven points taken in three days which therefore allow Swedish players to finish in first place in their group, ahead of Spain in particular. And now they will find Ukraine again, hoping to go even further in the competition. However, we should not expect an easy meeting for Sweden! Ukraine also retains the means to qualify for the future. For its entry into the running, Andriy Shevchenko’s team made a strong impression against the Netherlands. Yet led by two goals, she managed to equalize against one of the outsiders of this Euro 2020. If the Oranje finally managed to win in the last minutes (3-2), that does not detract from the very great performance of Ukrainian players!
They then managed to take their first three points against North Macedonia (2-1). We expected then to see them make a result against Austria, to secure second place in this group. But nothing went as planned! The Austrians managed to win in this meeting (1-0) and brought Ukraine down to third place. Andriy Yarmolenko’s teammates had to wait long days to find out if this total would be enough to be among the best third. And finally, it is indeed the case! We therefore expect to find a Ukrainian team ready to do anything to demonstrate that it has the level to play these round of 16. Especially since his opponent is far from unbeatable.
And we feel that Ukraine can create a surprise in this meeting. Andriy Shevchenko has the experience of these great meetings. He will be able to give some advice to his group, to allow him to approach this round of 16 as well as possible. Admittedly, this meeting can very well go to extra time or even to penalties. This is why we ensure with the qualification of Ukraine. Being able to count on elements of very high level, such as Andriy Yarmolenko or Viktor Tsygankov, Ukraine seems to have the means to pose big problems to Sweden. Especially since the Swedes could certainly have more pressure than their opponents of the day, since they finished at the top of their group.
