There was a bit of a break in Tottenham Hotspur’s tumultuous last few weeks on Monday night. Somehow, they only managed a 1-1 draw with relegation-fighting Everton at Goodison Park, despite conceding a second-half penalty and having an extra man for a third of the game. Interim manager Cristian Stellini was frustrated with his team’s failure to carry out a “plan” after the hosts went down to ten men, and must now come up with another to end their troubled run of just one win in six appearances (E3, P2).
Still in the battle for a Champions League place, but now low on confidence, Tottenham will take little consolation from their disappointing home record in the month of April; they have lost three of their last five PL games in the month. Another would make Stellini the first Spurs manager since Clive Allen in 2007 to lose his first official home game in charge, with a record of G7, E2 for managers in the dugout since then.
Brighton aim to throw everything at them and benefit from Tottenham’s struggles as they chase what would be a remarkable top-four result. Their 2-0 win at home to Bournemouth on Tuesday night means they have now suffered just one official defeat in all of 2023 (G10, E4). That win also reduced the gap to Spurs going into this matchday to just four points, with two games in hand.
The Seagulls’ last visit to the capital came in February when they drew 1-1 with Crystal Palace. Solly March scored after halftime in that clash, meaning that 15 of Brighton’s last 18 PL goals in London have come in the second half. That’s an important stat, considering an agonizing 90th-minute goal here last season (1-0) ended a run of five straight Brighton defeats to their arch-rivals.
Players to watch: Tottenham scored in five of their last seven official meetings against Brighton, with Harry Kane scoring in all five. Labeled an “incredible player” by teammate Alexis MacAllister after Brighton’s win on Tuesday night, 18-year-old Evan Ferguson has scored four goals in his last four games for club and country.
