Tottenham – Eintracht Frankfurt : Preview & Prediction
Despite the emotional and psychological difficulties that came with the passing of one of the club’s fitness coaches, Gian Piero Ventrone, last week, Tottenham found the spirit and focus to bounce back from last week’s surprise 0-0 draw at home to Eintracht Frankfurt to win away to Brighton, one of the league’s best-performing teams. Spurs manager Antonio Conte was visibly emotional and dedicated the result to Ventrone, a man who, according to Conte, “was in the heart of every single person at Tottenham.”
Sometimes these moments can mean turning a season around, and that is precisely what Tottenham are looking for after their inconsistency has made the following UEFA Champions League (UCL) matches crucial. However, that may be the last thing Conte needed as he later implied to the media that his squad lacked the depth to succeed in multiple competitions this season.
After a surprise result against Spurs last week, Frankfurt were thrashed 3-0 by Bochum, previously winless in the campaign, and in doing so Frankfurt became the first club in this Bundesliga season to fail to score against Bochum. The consequence is that they once again dropped out of the Top 6 of the Bundesliga standings, and in addition, they have failed to score in four of their last seven matches in all competitions – that must be a concern for coach Oliver Glasner.
Thanks to a 1-0 win at home to Marseille a month ago, Frankfurt remain unbeaten in seven away games in European competition (G6, E1) after last season becoming only the third team in history to complete a UEFA Europa League campaign without defeat. Perhaps most alarmingly for Tottenham, that includes five away wins after scoring the opening goal, including a 3-2 win at Camp Nou against FC Barcelona, another result that serves as another reminder that this team is not to be taken lightly.
Players to watch: Tottenham midfielder Ivan Perišić has scored in two separate wins against Frankfurt for two clubs, and would be delighted to score again after he recorded three assists in all competitions during September. His Croatian compatriot, Frankfurt’s Kristijan Jakić, scored a goal the last time he played the full 90 minutes away from home (against Stuttgart).
Key fact: Only one of the six Group D matches in UCL 2022/23 has ended in goals for both teams.
