Toulouse were rewarded with a place in this season’s UEFA Europa League (UEL) by winning the Coupe de France in what was their first season in the French top flight since 2019/20. That ended the “Violets'” 14-year wait for European soccer, but the sheer number of games on their schedule seems to be taking its toll, as they have won just three of their 14 matches this season (E6, P5).
Still, Carles Martinez Novell’s men will want to keep this trip around the continent alive, but for that they will probably need a win here, as they look set to battle for second place in Group C with Belgium’s Union SG, who have also accumulated four points. The two shared the spoils on matchday one in a 1-1 draw, but with Toulouse then beating bottom-placed LASK, a heavy 5-1 defeat against next opponents Liverpool on the final day will surely have bruised their egos.
The English team has prevailed in Group C, with a perfect record of three wins from three games. The European giants can now qualify for the Round of 16 if they emerge victorious from the Stadium Municipal, extending their record of having reached the knockout stage in each of their last eight European campaigns.
The “Reds” will not be preparing Anfield for the UEL knockout rounds just yet, as their away form in Europe has been inconsistent in recent times (G5, E2, P8). Liverpool also showed a chink in their armor away from home when a run of four consecutive wins came to an end at the weekend after a disappointing 1-1 draw with Premier League newcomers Luton.
Players to watch: Thijs Dallinga was the man who put Toulouse on the scoreboard at Anfield, meaning he has scored each of his side’s last three goals. Liverpool did not start Dominik Szoboszlai that day, but they may do so now, as his last 14 scoring appearances at club level have all ended in victory.
