AS Roma – Feyenoord Prediction (25-05-2022)

AS Roma – Feyenoord : Preview & Prediction

AS Roma are very close to winning their first European trophy in their history after failed attempts in the final of the Champions League in 1984 and the Europa League in 1991. The proposed opponent, Feyenoord Rotterdam, is, on paper, well within the Italian team’s reach. In their European campaign this season, the Italian side have only lost two games against Bodo/Glimdt (1-6 and 1-2) and still eliminated Leicester (1-1 and 1-0) in the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League. José Mourinho’s side have lost only three of their last 20 games in all competitions and have shown a certain solidity, winning against Atalanta Bergamo (1-4) and Lazio Rome (3-0) and catching Napoli (1-1) on the road. La Louve, after losing 2-0 in Florence, followed up with a 1-1 draw against Venice before winning easily at Torino (0-3) at the weekend thanks to a brace from top scorer Abraham and a goal from Pellegrini.

Feyenoord Rotterdam, for their part, ended their league campaign on 15 May with a 1-2 defeat at home to Twente. This was the seventh defeat of the season in the Eredivisie, but it did not prevent Slot’s men from finishing third on the podium. The partners of Linssen (13 goals in the league) have beaten Olympique de Marseille (3-2 and 0-0) in the semi-final of the UEFA Europa Conference League on 5 May. The Dutch club has had a solid run on the European stage, posting zero defeats in the group stage of this C3, but recording four draws throughout the competition at Maccabi Haifa (0-0), against Slavia Prague (2-2 and 3-3) and in France against Olympique de Marseille (0-0) in their last European match. Feyenoord had a lot of success against the club from Marseille, taking advantage of their defensive blunders in the first leg and their lack of offensive efficiency in the second. There is no doubt that Roma’s Portuguese coach, José Mourinho, has analysed this opponent and will be able to counter the fast Dutch strikers to place some sharp counter-attacks that could be decisive on the outcome of the match.

Two teams with a very similar form over the last few games played! With an identical record in their last 5 games, the last match played by each of these two teams has given a small trend for this final. José Mourinho’s Roma won 0-3 against Torino in a game that was generally well controlled and with a good offensive efficiency. On the other hand, Feyenoord, who had nothing left to play for and who were stuck in third place in the Eredivisie, did not have much confidence and lost 1-2 against Twente at home, who had nothing to play for either. The only positive point was that Cyriel Dessers found the net again, confirming his good season (10 goals in the Conference League).

Both teams are expected to be in the starting line-up on Wednesday evening! José Mourinho is expected to keep his 3 central defenders system which has been the strength of his team this year. Smalling is said to be doubtful, but should be able to hold his place. The same goes for Karsdorp, who will be replaced by Maitland-Niles if he misses out. Mkhitaryan is also uncertain, but is not a starter anyway. Up front, the magnificent trio Zaniolo-Pellegrini-Abraham should logically lead the attack. As for Feyenoord, the uncertainties concern Malacia, Trauner and Nelson. The former is expected to keep his place in goal, but will be replaced by Bijlow if he is absent. In attack, the competition’s top scorer, Cyriel Dessers, will be up front!
