Inter Milan finished with more than 25 shots but failed to score for the third time in Serie A (SA) in the last ten seasons in their goalless draw against Sampdoria on Monday, a result that left them 15 points behind league leaders Napoli. Coach Simone Inzaghi “wanted a different result” as his team missed the chance to make it four wins in a row and Inter now have the added complication of their upcoming UEFA Champions League match against Porto on their minds.
Not conceding goals was the only positive from that result against Sampdoria, as the Nerazzurri now chase a third consecutive clean sheet in SA for the first time since December 2021. However, that result drew boos from the home fans, and while coach Andrea Sottil said he respected “their boos, but I don’t share them very much,” he knows that correcting their dismal run is something they must do if they are to salvage the season.
Therefore, Sottil expects his team to be excited about the prospect of achieving their first league season winning double over Inter since the 2012/13 campaign after a 3-1 comeback in the previous game a few months ago. Similar to Inter’s home games, Udinese have seen their last three away games (G1, P2) end with a 1-0 scoreline, so a single goal could be key for Udinese to pull off the upset in this clash.
Players to watch: Edin Džeko could be a lucky omen for Inter, as the striker has won 12 games against Udinese (E3), his personal record. Looking to dent that record could be Destiny Udogie, unbeaten for Udinese in his eight league games in which he scored (G5, E3), five of which saw exactly four goals scored.
