Liverpool – Inter : Preview & Prediction
Liverpool took a big step towards qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Champions League after winning the first leg in Italy 2-0 on 16 February. The Reds have won their seventh straight Champions League match this season. In the group stage, Jurgen Klopp’s side came out on top in a tough group where they beat Porto (5-1 and 2-0), AC Milan (3-2 and 2-1) and Atletico Madrid (3-2 and 2-0). Unbeaten at Anfield Road for the last six games on the European stage, Liverpool have therefore ensured that they have taken maximum points against AC Milan, Los Colchoneros and the Portuguese club. The team that finished second to Manchester City in the Premier League (6 points behind but one game behind) has been on a roll since January 16, as it has been winning all the time. Salah’s side have won their last 12 games in all competitions, most recently against Norwich City (2-1) in the FA Cup and West Ham (1-0) on Saturday in the Premier League. The Reds are unbeaten at their home ground in 2021-2022… After 22 games, Liverpool have won 18 and drawn four, one of the best records in Europe. Inter Milan, who have a two-goal deficit to overcome, are hoping for a miracle to reach the quarter-finals. The Italian side, who lost the first leg 2-0 on home soil, see the challenge on English soil as too difficult to overcome. The Nerazzurri were unconvincing away from home during the group stage, recording only a 3-1 win in Moldova against Sheriff Tiraspol. The other two European games were disappointing with a draw in Ukraine against Chakhtar Donetsk (0-0) and a defeat in Spain against Real Madrid (2-0) on 7 December. The Serie A leaders returned to winning ways this weekend after a long run of 5 games without success (3 draws and 2 defeats). There is nothing to celebrate as the Inter Milanese played the Calcio’s red lantern, Salernitana. However, the Lombardy club fulfilled their mission by crushing the bottom of the class 5 goals to 0 thanks to a hat-trick from Lautaro Martinez and a double from Edin Dzeko. The win will do much to boost the morale of Simone Inzaghi’s troops, who are waiting for an away win at the start of the year 2022. Inter Milan have drawn four times away from Giuseppe Meazza, with draws at Atalanta Bergamo (0-0), Napoli (1-1), Genoa (0-0) and AC Milan (0-0) on 1 March. Anfield Road seems to be an insurmountable mountain for the Italians, who should leave this Champions League on a new counter performance.
For this second leg of the Champions League Round of 16, hope is relatively slim for the Italians. They were beaten 2-0 in the first leg and are in average form, so it’s hard to see the Nerazzurri achieving anything at Anfield. And even less so against this Liverpool. It’s a good thing the Reds have been in trouble this weekend against West Ham (a 1-0 win in a tough game with a lot of chances conceded), but they are still a winning machine, and even more so at home. They have just beaten Chelsea on penalties in the League Cup final, and qualified for the FA Cup quarter-finals this weekend. They are therefore in the running to win all the trophies, as they have one foot in the Champions League quarter-finals, and they are back in the league, with a huge duel against Manchester City awaiting us until the 38th day. Inter, on the other hand, had only won one of their last 7 games before this weekend! The reigning Italian champion has set the record straight, easily disposing of the league’s bottom club (5-0 against Salternitana).
