Villarreal – Liverpool : Preview & Prediction
Since the start of this year’s Champions League, Liverpool have continued to impress. The Reds came out of the group of death with six wins in six games and then beat Inter Milan and Benfica Lisbon to reach the last four of the competition. And Jürgen Klopp’s team remain the favourites for the double-header. Indeed, they face Villarreal CF. In the first leg, Mohamed Salah’s teammates have already done a good part of the work. Despite an excellent Spanish defence, Liverpool managed to break the deadlock in the second half, scoring two goals in just two minutes (2-0). Now the English club expects to do the same at the Yellow Submarine. And the current Premier League runners-up come into the game with confidence, having won their last five games in all competitions.
For their part, Villarreal CF have not prepared for the second leg of their Champions League semi-final in the best possible way. The Yellow Submarine lost 2-1 at Alavés prior to the game. They are only in seventh place in La Liga. However, Unai Emery’s team has had an incredible run in the Champions League. After beating Atalanta Bergamo in the group stage, the Spanish club went on to knock out Juventus and Bayern Munich. But now, the situation looks much more complicated against Liverpool. The Spanish club lost the first leg of their tie, which was not the case in the last eight and the quarter-finals. The Yellow Submarine’s players didn’t take a single shot on target at Anfield. It looks like it will still be very difficult for them, even for a game that is played, this time at home.
Liverpool are in much better form than Villarreal, that’s for sure. The Reds won the first leg of their tie 2-0 and followed it up last weekend with another win over Newcastle in the Premier League (0-1). In Spain, the defeat at Anfield seems to have left its mark, as the yellow submarine also lost last Saturday at Alavés (2-1). In the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals, the advantage is Liverpool’s in terms of current form.
