Bayern Munich, surprised in the first leg of the quarter-final in Spain, must beat Villareal in the second leg at the Allianz Arena to continue their Champions League adventure. After being beaten 1-0 at the Ceramica stadium following an early goal from Dutch striker Danjuma, the Munich club did not score a goal for the first time this season on the European stage. The Germans will need to score big at home as they did so well in the 5-0 win over Dynamo Kiev, the 5-2 win over Benfica, the 3-0 win over Barcelona and the 7-1 win over Salzburg. Robert Lewandowski, who did not score in the first leg, is expected to come to life in the second leg, having scored 12 goals in nine Champions League matches in the 2021-2022 campaign. The German league leaders, who are closing in on a new national title, just scored their 22nd Bundesliga victory at the weekend by beating Augsburg (1-0) and preparing for the all-important European match against Villarreal. The yellow “submarine” did not have the same success this weekend with a 1-1 draw at home against Athletic Bilbao, thus signing a 3rd game in a row without a win in La Liga (2 defeats and 1 draw). The current 7th-placed team has lost its last three away games at Osasuna (1-0), Cadiz CF (1-0) and Levante (2-0) but surprisingly won 3-0 in Turin against Juventus on 16 March. Villarreal have also won at Young Boys Bern (4-1) and Atalanta Bergamo (3-2), but their only defeat in England was at Manchester United (2-1) on 29 September 2021. In Germany, the opposition will be much more complicated with a Bavarian side who have a history of crushing their opponents in European competition over the past few years and have proved to be unstoppable.
