The first leg was a hard-fought affair. Manchester City were favourites to win the Champions League quarter-final against Atletico Madrid, but they were up against a very strong opponent in the first leg. However, the Mancunian club came up against a very solid opponent. As is now customary, the Madrid team did everything possible to avoid conceding a goal. And it almost worked! The Sky Blues had to wait until the second half and a goal from Kevin De Bruyne to get a short victory (1-0). Pep Guardiola’s team therefore has a short advantage before travelling to Spain. As one of the favourites to win the Champions League, the English club will have something to play for against Atletico Madrid. Manchester City are the Premier League’s leaders and are coming off a 2-2 draw with Liverpool in their league clash. It is the first time that a team has gone nine games without defeat. Bernardo Silva’s team-mates will certainly not be travelling with the aim of drawing the game. It is therefore believed that Manchester City will win the second leg of their quarter-final.
Atletico Madrid will have to show a different face. In the first leg, the Madrid club did not take a single shot on goal. To make up for that, they will have to be much more attacking. And Diego Simeone’s men are not in great shape. In the first half of the season, they lost 1-0 at RCD Mallorca in La Liga, a team struggling to hold on to their title. The Colchoneros are still in fourth place in the Spanish league. However, they are now just one point ahead of their nearest rivals. Atletico Madrid are therefore a long way from qualifying for the next Champions League. The Madrid club will have a hard time getting their heads above water against Manchester City. Their opponents should once again manage to get their foot on the ball. On the counter-attack, Atletico Madrid will try to project themselves forward very quickly. However, they will leave plenty of space for the United strikers. This will make Pep Guardiola’s team very happy!
Champions League quarter-final second leg! Guardiola’s men took the lead in the first leg thanks to a Kevin De Bruyne goal, and arrive in Spain with the firm intention of reaching the semi-finals. City continued their good form of recent weeks last weekend with a good point against Liverpool (2-2), keeping them at the top of the Premier League. For their opponents, Atletico Madrid, it has been a nightmare week. After a very poor game and defeat in England, the Colchoneros lost again last weekend, this time in La Liga, 1-0 in Mallorca. The defeat leaves Betis just one point behind Griezmann’s team-mates, and the end of the season is likely to be tense in the league. Simeone’s team will have to get back on track quickly, starting by offering real content and football in this match, to make people forget the very bad performance of the first leg.
