Villarreal – Bayern Munich : Preview & Prediction
Bayern Munich will meet Villarreal for the third time in their history after two previous victorious duels in 2011 (2-0 and 3-1)… Villarreal have been labelled as the minnows of these quarter-finals and should logically leave the competition at the semi-final stage. The Spanish team has been disappointing in recent weeks, as the current seventh-placed team in La Liga has lost three of its last four games: at Osasuna (1-0), at Cadiz CF (1-0) and at Levante (2-0) this weekend. The yellow “submarine” has not prepared well for this European meeting, but we must not forget that Coquelin’s partners have taken out Juventus Turin in the 1/8 final (1-1 and 0-3) with a qualification obtained in Italy on March 16th. However, Unai Emery’s team had difficulties at the Ceramica stadium, obtaining only one win in four games against Young Boys of Bern (2-0). At home, Villarreal have also shared points with Atalanta Bergamo (2-2) and Juventus (1-1) and also lost to Manchester United (0-2) last November. The Spanish club will find it hard to resist the Munich juggernaut. Bayern, the undisputed Bundesliga leaders (9 points ahead of Borussia Dortmund), have just completed a 10th game without defeat at Freiburg (4-1) on Saturday, having humiliated Union Berlin (4-0) at the Allianz Arena just before the international break. Nagelsmann’s side, unbeaten for almost two months, are back in the Champions League, where they have won seven and drawn one of their eight European games. The Bavarians have beaten Benfica (0-4 and 5-2), Barcelona (0-3 and 3-0) and Salzburg (7-1) in the first leg of the round of 16. The German team will be able to count on their Polish international striker Robert Lewandowski, who has scored 12 goals since the start of the 2021-2022 Champions League. The Bundesliga’s top scorer is three goals away from matching his record of 15 goals in 10 Champions League matches in the 2019-2020 season. Robert Lewandowski could come close in this double-header against a Villarreal side that has still conceded 10 goals in 8 Champions League games this season. Bayern Munich, meanwhile, are a goal-scoring machine… The German club has scored 30 goals in 8 European games, an average of 3.75 goals. Even so, Villareal should be warned!
Villarreal have lost 3 of their last 5 games.
Villarreal have lost two in a row at Cadiz and Levante.
Bayern Munich are unbeaten in their last 8 matches (5 wins and 3 draws).
Bayern are coming off two big scores in their favour against Union Berlin and at Freiburg.
The Spanish team’s home record in the Champions League is not great: 1 win, 2 draws and 1 loss.
Bayern Munich have been a steamroller in this Champions League: 7 wins and 1 draw in 8 games.
Bayern Munich are aiming for a 7th Champions League title, the 4th since the early 2000s… To do so, they must eliminate this Villarreal team to reach the last four. A victory on Spanish soil seems obvious, as Bayern seems to be on top of the game this season on the European scene!
